Tonight for the first time in close to a month I am chilling at home. Not the place my heart still calls home back in Spain, but my new home in Bangalore. And it feels great!
The past 36 hours have been a roller coaster ride to say the least. I moved out of the hotel I had been staying at for over 3 weeks. Spent close to four hours signing the lease on the new apartment and sealing that deal. After that I embarked on the craziest road trip from Bangalore to Chennai and back in 14+ hours to FINALLY collect my two cats who flew in from Barcelona (I will blog about that road trip separately)…spending the first night in our new apartment in the backseat of a Suzuki instead.
But not tonight. Tonight I am marveling once again at Indian efficiency. Between 15:00 Tuesday and 14:00 Wednesday, I was moved into the flat, contracted my housekeeper, a guy came to setup my account for gas and the first tank and a new regulator was brought up. Then a guy came to hook up SKY TV with the three English entertainment and movie packages (here it is Tata Sky, by the way, which I thought was funny). And last but certainly not least, Airtel is in the process of setting up my Internet Wi-Fi home network, which will be ready within four days. Lordy lordy!!! Gotta love India!! Without an appointment, all of this would have been impossible in Spain — and even then some of these items on the list would take weeks. So India…I once again stand in awe and want to thank you for your warm welcome. Tonight I am starting to feel like Bangalore really is my home.
Okay, so now on to some fun stuff 🙂 In the 3.5 weeks that I have lived here, I have only gone out to eat lunch at a restaurant once. Oddly, it is just not something that is done at my company. Even the executive team either brings in their lunch or orders a curry and some naan from the local shop around the corner and the guys who bring tea, etc will run out and pick it up for us. Pretty cool system, to be honest with you. Then we all eat on the rooftop together, where we have plates, utensils, a water cooler and sink, etc etc. Well, I have never taken my lunch to work (okay, maybe a dozen times in 5 years??) and don’t see myself changing anytime soon. Sooo….my lovely new housekeeper has agreed to cook each day and place it in Tupperware so that I can take my lunch to work with me each day instead of ordering it from the shop around the corner.
Today she made lunch as a “test” to make sure I liked it. She’s going to do the shopping for us as well so she went out and picked up a bit of everything we needed in order to create yummy curries, came back, started cooking…. and made me the best home cooked lunch I can remember in ages!! She also makes fresh naan, and was not happy to see I had bought packaged bread!!! “No mam, no more naan from store. It’s no good.” Sounds great to me!!! Thursday will be my first day taking my lunch to work, can’t wait!!
After all the drama, the kitties are finally here and I couldn’t be happier. It was hysterical watching them investigate every square inch of the new apartment but it appears that they are okay with their new home. They are obviously a bit traumatized from the flights and 7 hour drive back from Chennai because they just want to be pet and are still insanely tired. I wish my daughter was here but having the cats with me now and moving into the flat have made a huge difference in my new life.
RESTAURANT REVIEW: Dinner tonight was amazing, and my first night out in Bangalore with fabulous humans instead of my *also* fabulous laptop!! haha! Tandoor on MG Road was the spot. This is an amazing Indian restaurant that is decorated to perfection, has a huge menu with lots of special dishes and … wait for it …. wine! I tried several new Veg dishes that I really loved, and finished off the night with my hands-down TIP-TOP favorite dessert Goolab Jamoon 🙂 On a Wednesday night the place was packed, and the food was absolutely perfect.
XOXO from my new home… Bangalore!
